California Newt Mating Ball, Big Basin

Big Basin is a special place for me. My first backpacking trip, countless trail runs and hikes. I know that park better than any other. So I was pretty torn up about the CZU fire. I had actually been working on music for a long (~30min)trail running video when the fire happened. I think I may have to alter the project.

This video I took on an overnight at Big Basin near Silver Falls in April of 2019. It’s of a group of California Newts in a mating ball (multiple amplexus). Male newts grasp a single female in an attempt to mate with her. Rediscovered this while going through footage and set it to music.

I caught a rattlesnake in the middle of lunch on a solo overnight backpacking trip in Ventana Wilderness and took some video.
